I've lived on Oʻahu for nine years, and one of my favorite things about island life is sharing this beautiful place with the people I love.
I especially enjoy showing my niece and visiting friends around Kailua, spending time at the beach, exploring town, and enjoying the little things that make this part of the island so special.

Why Visit Kailua Beach from Waikiki?
Waikiki is a wonderful place to stay during your vacation, but there's so much more to explore on Oʻahu. Just a drive across the island brings you to Kailua, a charming beach town on the windward coast known for its beautiful shoreline, relaxed atmosphere, and incredible scenery.
Kailua Beach is one of those places that makes you want to slow down and enjoy the moment. Whether you're walking along the shoreline, relaxing on the sand, swimming and snorkeling, or heading out for an ocean adventure, it's easy to spend hours enjoying the beauty around you. Kailua and Lanikai are also perfect options for those who were unable to get tickets to Hanauma Bay. Lanikai has easier access and beautiful snorkeling, and KBA has all the gear for you! How to Get from Waikiki to Kailua Beach
Getting from Waikiki to Kailua Beach is relatively easy with just a 35-minute drive to our shop, and you have a few options depending on how you want to spend your day.
Option 1: Book a Package with Free Transportation

My tip: If you book in October for any date, you get FREE transportation for all tours! So many great deals when pre-planning.
Option 2: Drive from Waikiki
If you have a rental car, driving is another convenient way to reach Kailua. The drive typically takes around 35 minutes, depending on traffic and your starting point.
I recommend leaving Waikiki in the morning so you have plenty of time to enjoy the beach, explore town, and make the most of your day. Remember, we have free Kailua and Lanikai beach parking within walking distance to the beach!
Option 3: Take Public Transportation
You can also travel from Waikiki toward Kailua by public bus. Depending on the route, you may need to transfer and arrange a walk or additional transportation to reach the beach.
Check current bus schedules and return connections before leaving so you can plan your day comfortably.
Start Your Morning at Kailua Beach Park
Once you arrive in Kailua, head to Kailua Beach Park and take in that beautiful ocean view!
The soft sand and bright blue water create a stunning backdrop for a relaxing beach day. Whether you're visiting with family, friends, or your partner, there are so many ways to enjoy this beautiful stretch of coastline.
Some of my favorite things to do include walking along the shoreline, relaxing in the sand, taking photos, and hopping in the water to snorkel and boogie board. When I bring my niece or visiting friends to Kailua, I love seeing their excitement when they take in the scenery.
If you want to get out on the water, you can also get kayaks/SUP from Kailua Beach Adventures. Depending on your plans, you might also enjoy a daypass with all the beach gear you could want.
Explore Kailua Town
After spending some time at the beach, make sure to explore Kailua town!
One of the things I love about Kailua is that it's more than just a beautiful beach. The town has a relaxed neighborhood atmosphere, local shops, cafés, and places to grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.
My tip: I always encourage visitors to experience more than just the beach. Take a bike from the shop and go check out the different food shops in kailua town like nalu, konos and kalapawai!
Should You Visit Lanikai Beach Too?
YES! Lanikai Beach is the perfect spot for both snorkeling and a relaxing beach day with the family!
I personally loved bringing my niece here to learn how to swim and snorkel. It’s such a special place for little ones to build confidence in the water while having fun and exploring the beauty of Hawaii!
If you have time definitley add Lanikai Beach to your Kailua day trip.
Located near Kailua, Lanikai is famous for its beautiful turquoise water, soft sand, and views of the Mokulua Islands. It's an incredible spot for a scenic walk and snorkeling!
However, Lanikai is a residential neighborhood with limited parking. Local tip: Rent snorkel gear or bikes from KBA and get free parking just a 15 minute bike to lanikai!
If you're visiting for just one day, you don't have to squeeze everything in. Spending most of your time at Kailua Beach and exploring town can be just as memorable.
What to Pack for Your Kailua Beach Day
A little preparation goes a long way when planning a beach day in Hawaiʻi. Here are a few essentials I recommend bringing from Waikiki:
- Swimsuit and a change of clothes
- Beach towel or lightweight beach blanket
- Reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
- Reusable water bottle and plenty of drinking water
- Snacks or a plan for lunch in Kailua town
- Waterproof bag for your phone and valuables
- Comfortable sandals or walking shoes
- A reusable bag to take your rubbish with you
We also have a one-stop shop where you can get almost anything you could want for your day!
If you're traveling with kids, bring extra snacks, water, shade, and anything else they need to stay comfortable.
If needed, we do have wagons for rental as well as beach lockers!
My Ideal Kailua Beach Day Itinerary
If I were helping friends visiting from Waikiki plan their day, here's how I'd organize it.
- 8:00 AM – Start Your Day in Waikiki
Get ready for your Kailua adventure. If you've booked a package with Kailua Beach Adventures, confirm your transportation details ahead of time.
- 9:00 AM – Arrive in Kailua
Head to Kailua Beach and take a walk along the shoreline. Enjoy the beautiful views and settle in for a relaxing morning.
- 10:00 AM – Enjoy Your Beach Adventure
Spend time relaxing on the sand, enjoying the scenery, or participating in an ocean activity that suits your experience and the day's conditions.
- 12:00 PM – Grab Lunch in Kailua Town
Take a break from the sun and explore local cafés, restaurants, and shops.
- 1:30 PM – Explore More of Kailua
Return to the beach, enjoy a scenic walk, or visit Lanikai if you have planned for transportation and parking.
- 3:30 PM – Begin Your Return to Waikiki
Wrap up your day and allow enough time for your return journey.
You can always adjust this itinerary to fit your plans. The goal is to enjoy Kailua without feeling like you have to rush from one place to another.
