Exploring Mokoli’i
(Chinaman’s Hat)
The Little Island with a big spirit
Just off the coast of Kualoa Regional Park sits one of Oʻahu’s most iconic landmarks—Mokoliʻi, better known as Chinaman’s Hat. Its unique cone shape rises out of Kāneʻohe Bay, a spot that feels both playful and mysterious. For locals, it’s a beloved sight we grew up seeing on family beach days. For visitors, it’s a must-see stop that promises adventure, legend, and epic views
The Legend of Mokoli’i
In Hawaiian mythology, Mokoliʻi is said to be part of a giant lizard (moʻo) defeated by the goddess Hiʻiaka. The island is believed to be the tip of its tail, left behind as a reminder of her victory.
Stories like these connect us deeply to the land and remind us to treat it with respect whenever we visit.
