Our Story

HistoryReel.jpg
It was 1982 and the sport of windsurfing was going wild in Hawaii. Professionals were turning up from as far away as Europe to compete in this new and exciting sport. A couple of Kailua guys caught the bug and “Kailua Sailboard Company” was born!

Windsurfing was in and Kailua was Mecca. A couple of enthusiasts wanted to get there hands on some gear and found a back alley for rent. The Kailua Sailboards Company catered to the exponential demand of windsurfers and featured the latest and greatest equipment.

The big move came in 1985 when the company relocated to the newly renovated Kailua Beach Center, previously occupied by Foodland. Now within walking distance to the beach, lessons for beginners were offered and the company branched out to include the next big thing, kitesurfing.

In 1995 Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks, Inc. was founded and all assets from Kailua Sailboard Company were transferred. Under new management the company started to focus on activities other than windsurfing. Kailua Bay provided the ideal tropical playground for kayaking and exploration. Athletic and outgoing surfers were hand selected, trained by Lifeguards and developed into some of the worlds best kayak guides. In the coming years training was intensified and a custom kayak guide training program was developed.
